Infrared Technology
Infrared technology was originally developed for military applications. All objects give off infrared rays based
on their temperature. Infrared rays are invisible to our eyes but not to an infrared camera which can see these
invisible rays given off by all every day things such as our bodies, roofs, windows, etc. These rays are captured
by the camera and computer software converts them into pictures that we can see. The result is extraordinary;
as these infrared cameras can look through walls, floors and ceilings to reveal what is behind them.
The blue areas in the infrared photo (above left) reveal missing insulation not seen by the naked eye, as
shown in the photo above right. This homeowner was able to get the insulation fixed by the builder before the
home warranty expired, saving a potentially expensive repair and lowering utility charges.
The Black areas in the
infrared photo (right)
reveal water intrusion
not visible to the naked
eye as shown in the far
right-hand image. This
home owner was able
to get the leaking
window frame fixed and
prevent extensive
damage to the sub
floor.
The White areas in the infrared photo to the left reveal an
overheating fuse not visible to the naked eye. This problem
is common in older houses and poses a significant safety
risk and fire hazard even though it is a relatively simple
problem to repair.
